Weekend Getaways NSW

A spa trip can provide not only a romantic setting for couples, but also a relaxing way to unwind from the daily stress of life. If you only want to experience the best spa getaway you can find, stop looking and choose between the five top spa destinations in the world.

Romantic escapes come in all shapes and sizes, but one of the best has to be the simple weekend getaway to somewhere close by, with plenty of things to do once you arrive. Apart from the many obvious attractions of Sydney, NSW has dozens of destinations that are perfect for a few days of rest and relaxation.

Blue Mountains

Conveniently located to the west of Sydney, the Blue Mountains scream romance with their heady mix of spectacular mountain and bush scenery, pretty little towns and settlements and great cafes and restaurants. Spend a day taking in the famous sights like Katoomba Falls, Scenic World or the Tree Sisters or exploring the ancient eucalyptus forest on one of the many excellent bushwalks that pattern the Blue Mountains National Park.

The towns of Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath are popular with visitors, but so are many of other smaller places like Glenbrook and Wentworth Falls. With cozy cottages, peaceful cabins set in the bush, some fabulous Bed and Breakfast establishments and smart hotels, the Mountains are great for a quick romantic break.

One of the many delights of the Blue Mountains is that the climate varies so much in the course of a year. Visit in summer and it is hot, the air thick with eucalypt scent, whilst in winter it’s cold and you can even get snowfall. In fact, July is an increasingly popular time to book short breaks to the ‘Mountains as many hotels and Bed and Breakfasts run Christmas in July celebrations known as 'Yule Fest'.

Southern Highlands

Lush rolling hills, farms and National Park wilderness, wineries, fantastic shops and markets, museums, tourist drives – the Southern Highlands has it all.

Bowral is the main hub of the area and has many attractions from the Bradman Museum of Cricket to the Bowral Tulip Festival (Tulip Time) each Spring, the fabulous hikes that criss-cross Mount Gibraltar and the beautiful Hopewood Garden – a real favourite with lovers. Nearby Berrima is a lovely colonial town with some fantastic period accommodation, whilst Mittagong is a picturesque place to stay with its close proximity to waterfalls, bushwalks and Lake Alexandra.

Another popular spot, just a little further south, is Kangaroo Valley that has some fabulous cabins and Bed and Breakfast hotels – perfect for romantic getaways.

Hunter Valley

Heading North from Sydney, the glorious Hunter Valley includes such delightful towns as Pokolbin, Cessnock, Broke, Maitland and Muswellbrook. However, it is the wine that most tourists make the trip for and it’s easy to see why. The Hunter Valley is dotted with wineries and you can happily spend the day hopping from cellar door to wine tasting to restaurant, sampling liberally along the way.

As you would expect, the area has some wonderful accommodation with hotels, holiday rentals, pretty cottages and luxury resorts plentiful across the region. Our favourite option is to find a winery with boutique accommodation that is both chic, but intimate, and eat and drink to our heart’s content!

Do your research on accommodation deals as many places offer holiday packages such as 2 nights accommodation including breakfast and treats like champagne and chocolates – perfect for a romantic retreat!
