Snow Getaways

NSW and Victoria

As wonderful as the Australian summer undoubtedly is, there is something particularly magical about a romantic weekend at the snow. Breathing in crisp mountain air, catching snowflakes on your tongue, playing snowballs with your beloved, sipping mulled wine and finding new ways to keep warm – it sounds pretty idyllic really, doesn't it? And then there's the spectacular scenery, just made to share with someone special. Whether you fancy a fully–blown ski package or just to rent a cozy cabin and snuggle up in front of a roaring open fire whilst the snow tumbles past your window, there are loads of magical places to check out in the snow if your searching for romantic getaways.

If you've never seen the ski fields of the Victorian Alps or Snowy Mountains as conducive to passion, think again. From Mt Hotham, to Thredbo, from Mt Buller to Perisher, from Falls Creek to Charlotte Pass, weekend getaways are hot – so to speak! A ski resort can be the perfect place to get to know someone special, with some fabulous luxury hotels and penthouse apartments just waiting for you to arrive with a bottle of champagne and some mood enhancing candles. Just consider it for a moment. An exhilarating day of skiing and fun in the snow, then back to you luxury ski accommodation – perhaps a snug ski chalet or a cozy alpine lodge – for some après ski. And don't forget that many of the ski villages also offer some great dining experiences and a different kind of bar scene from the usual Friday night out on the town.

If you're flexible about dates and your romantic holiday doesn't have to be a weekend getaway, you can have your pick of ski holidays and take advantage of some of the great ski deals available at many of the top ski hotels and resorts. Have a look into some of the romantic ski packages around and snow deals. If you and your loved one can only escape together from Friday to Sunday, check out the ski weekend offerings – you might get lucky with an intimate little ski chalet or apartment. And remember, skiing might be the excuse for travelling to the ski resorts, but you don't have to head outside and be energetic if you can find things to keep yourselves entertained in the comfort of your romantic accommodation.

New Zealand

It's only a 4 to 5 hour journey over tour Kiwi neighbours, so if you've got more than a couple of days to spare, why not book a flight to New Zealand and revel in the winter wonderland over the Tasman. Yep, there's skiing again at world renowned ski slopes near Queenstown, Wanaka and Mt Hutt, amongst others. But New Zealand also has something that no Aussie ski resort can offer - the romance and majesty of glaciers. Both the Fox Glacier and its cousin, the Franz Josef Glacier would impress anyone if you whisked them off there for a romantic escape. And take it from me, few things are more memorable or special than cozying up to someone you love in the surreal, blue ice cool of an ice cave.

Apart from glaciers and snow fields, New Zealand is also a place of stunning natural beauty where mountains, valleys, waterfalls and ravines and conspire to dazzle visitors. Few things could be more magical then renting a cabin or lodge in the snow for an intimate getaway and waking up in the morning in the arms of your lover to see the incredible view from your window. Perfect!

Once the temperature starts to drop and the leaves have finished falling from the trees, many of us turn our minds to winter sports and the joys of skiing or snowboarding. One of the great things about heading to somewhere like Perisher or Thredbo is that you can combine the fun of a ski holiday with the indulgence of a romantic weekend away.
