Romantic Getaways

The lives we lead are increasingly fast paced and hectic, so it's important to step away from the day-to-day chaos every now and then and take some special time with the person you love. Our calendars tell us the 'must remember' occasions - birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries and, of course, Valentine's Day, but you don't have to wait for one of those to come round to treat your beloved to a romantic getaway. Here are some suggestions for weekend escapes that will thrill your partner whether you wish to treat them for Valentine's Day or just surprise them for the fun of it.

Winery Weekends

Australia is home to some wonderful wines and beautiful vineyards, many of which offer romantic accommodation packages. Few things could be more conducive to love than an afternoon strolling around a few wineries, wine tasting as you go, followed by an intimate meal at an award winning restaurant and then snuggling up together in a peaceful bed and breakfast, or picturesque cottage, overlooking rows of ancient vines. Heaven! If you think a winery getaway would suit you and your partner perfectly, you're spoilt for choice as many of our country's major cities have wine areas on their doorsteps. Sydney lies an hour or so south of the lovely Hunter Valley, Melbourne has the gorgeous Yarra Valley, Adelaide has both the Barossa and Claire Valleys and Perth is within driving distance of the fabulous Margaret River, with it's stunning wineries. It's well worth checking out their romantic break options, as many wineries cater specifically for lovers.

Beach Getaways

If lazing around in the sun is more your kind of thing, then maybe you should look into renting a beach house or seaside bungalow for your romantic escape. Waking up in a cottage by the sea and hearing the waves lap on the beach makes you feel like you're in another world. What could be nicer than a refreshing early morning swim, or a romantic moonlit stroll long the sand, hand in hand with your lover?

Winter Escapes

Spending time with your sweetheart doesn't have to be all kissed limbs and sun baking like lizards in the heat. Few things are more romantic than cuddling up in the arms of your partner in front of a roaring fireplace whilst snow (hopefully!) falls outside. Winter getaways and snow weekends can offer an excuse to stay in doors, eating sensuous food, drinking mulled wine and thinking up new ways to keep warm. What more could you want from a romantic escape?

City Breaks

You may feel you know your hometown well, but how often do you stay right in the centre and do all the fun things that tourists do? Staying in a boutique hotel or swish serviced apartment in the middle of town and sampling the art galleries and parks, restaurants and bars it has to offer can be a wonderful way to spend a romantic weekend and renew your love affair with the city. And if you're familiar enough with the town you live in, why not use a romantic getaway as an opportunity to check out somewhere new? Australia's cities are beautiful, fascinating and diverse, so book a weekend away and go and explore a new destination with someone special.

Country Getaways

The bush defines many of us as Australians, but how many of us actually spend much time out there enjoying it? Booking a farm stay or a romantic bed and breakfast in a fabulous, natural setting can to a really magical experience. The countryside is a wonderful place to slow down, look around you at the majesty of nature and wallow in the company of that special person in your life. You'll find the rhythm of the bush will ease away your tensions and leave you calm, relaxed and in tune with your beloved.
